2023 is projected to be a hard year economically, and those running Canadian corporations are only looking out for their own best interests.² As the cost of living rises, we need our government to step up and protect everyday people from the worst impacts of inflation and economic downturn.

A guaranteed, livable basic income would ensure that everyone can meet their most basic needs, like putting food on the table and keeping a roof over their heads. If a critical mass of people sends a message to their MPs demanding a guaranteed livable income, it could make our leaders reassess their priorities for the year and put basic income on the legislative agenda — or risk losing the support of their constituents.

The status quo is not working: everyday people are struggling to feed their families as food prices keep rising and many are unable to pay their bills. We know Canada’s wealth has grown during the pandemic. It’s time to build policy that addresses the root causes, rather than the symptoms, of systemic poverty.

That’s why I'm asking you to prioritize a guaranteed, livable basic income in 2023. Research shows that basic income could lift millions of people out of poverty, while boosting the economy by as much as $80 billion a year. Basic income trials and pilots have been successful in the past, leading to improved economic, social, and health outcomes. Will you push for a basic income policy internally, and publicly express your support for such an initiative?

It's a common sense solution that will help everyday people meet their basic needs. I urge you to make basic income a legislative priority this year.
